ABOUT THE SHOWS:
Impromptu Productions broke new ground this spring by bringing Kingston audiences the old and the new in a medley of the best of both worlds: the classic Shakespearean tragedy Romeo and Juliet was paired in rep with the critically acclaimed world premiere of local playwright Clayton Garrett's Mercutio and His Brother Valentine, performed in the same venue on alternate nights. The cast was the same in both productions, actors with large parts in one playing small roles in the other, and the cast and crew were drawn from both the Queen’s staff and student population and the wider Kingston community, fulfilling one of Impromptu’s goals of building bridges between town and gown.
While Romeo and Juliet needs little introduction, Mercutio and His Brother Valentine told the story from the perspective of characters on the margins of Shakespeare’s play, with a fresh, modern twist. Much like Stoppard's Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead's and Shakespeare's Hamlet, it was the perfect fit to run alongside Romeo and Juliet. For details about what went on between the scenes of both shows, please visit the show blog.
