Production Update #1

Posted by Impromptu Productions on Sunday, February 17, 2013 Under: RJMV

Preparations for Impromptu Productions’ Romeo & Juliet and Mercutio and his Brother Valentine are coming along nicely. The production team gathers once a week to talk about how things are going: what’s been done, what needs doing, what’s going well, and what isn’t. We’d like to share some of the highlights from this week’s meeting.

Our head of wardrobe, Katie McNeill, shared some of her sketches and ideas for costumes and they look fantastic! You can check them out here and here. In the next couple of weeks, Katie will be heading to local theatre companies to sift through their costumes and use her discerning eye to find what she needs. There are so many details that go into costumes and it is no easy job. Katie is in charge of researching the appropriate time period and putting together costumes that are faithful to that period. At the same time, she must work within the limits of both our budget and with those costumes available to us through the Kingston theatre community.

We are also delighted with the work of our graphic designer, Kendra Allen, who has been working on the poster for the show. She presented us with a few different design ideas and we’ve gone ahead and chosen one. We hope to have it up around Kingston by March 1st so keep a look out for it!

As head of props, Olivia Paty is busy attending rehearsals and keeping track of what will be needed. As with costumes, it is often tricky to keep within a limited budget in this department. It takes some very strategic thinking, and we will often depend a lot on what we can find amongst ourselves. The rest will be scavenged from various places around town.

As for publicity, we are excited about our new blog featuring weekly interviews with cast and crew as well as these production updates, which will appear every two weeks. We are also on the verge of sending out a press release to various news and communication outlets in Kingston. Lastly, we can now confirm that we will have a window display in the local bookstore Novel Idea starting April 14th.

We are still looking for costume assistants to help with sewing prior to the shows and/or dressing during the run, so please contact us at impromptukingston@gmail.com if you are at all interested
